DACA Renewal Checklist: Everything You Need to File on Time

Renewing your DACA on time is one of the most important things you can do to protect your immigration status and your ability to work legally in the United States. A late or incomplete renewal can lead to gaps in your work authorization — or worse, a lapse in your DACA protection entirely.

Use this checklist to make sure you have everything you need before you file.

✅ File 5–6 months (150–180 days) before your current DACA expires.

This gives you enough buffer to account for USCIS processing delays. Your current work authorization (EAD) is automatically extended for 180 days while your renewal is pending — but only if you file before it expires.

Filing Tips to Avoid Common Mistakes

✅ Double-check your address. If you have moved since your last DACA filing, make sure your new address is on all forms.

✅ Use your legal name. The name on your forms must match your identity documents exactly.

✅ Check for form version updates. USCIS occasionally releases updated versions of forms. Always download the latest version from USCIS.gov — do not reuse old forms.

✅ Do not leave fields blank. If a question does not apply to you, write "N/A" rather than leaving it empty.

✅ Keep copies of everything. Make copies of your entire package before mailing. Keep the originals of all documents.

✅ Send by certified mail with tracking. Always use a trackable mailing method so you have proof of delivery.

✅ Save your receipt notice. When USCIS receives your package, they will mail a receipt notice (Form I-797). Keep this — it proves your renewal is pending and extends your work authorization.
